US Senate: Biocidal Silver as a Wood Preservative ( Antimicrobial / Antibacterial Silver )

As first reported by the Silver Institute, 2003

The United States Senate Subcommittee on Forests and Public Land Management opened discussions on S. 432, the Public Lands Production Research Act of 2003, on September 11, 2003. Senator Larry Craig of Idaho led the discussions, which centered around finding viable replacements for preservatives currently used in the wood industry. Many of the currently used preservatives contain copper arsenate, which are being phased out of use due to their toxic effects on the environment.

If silver is shown to be an effective biocidal substance for wood preservation, over 80 million ounces of silver per year may eventually be consumed to pressure-treat wood.

“Given silver’s long-standing role as an effective biocide, it is important to study and fully explore the potential it may have as a wood preservative...”

- Senator Larry Craig
